Day 5: Scenic flight to Jomsom & ride to Kagbeni
A very scenic 15 minutes flight will take us to Jomsom, a village located at 2,743m, between the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri mountains. We will have breakfast at Jomsom, check bikes, and head into the mountains, riding along the Kaligandaki Gorge. Destination: Kagbeni (2,840m), an ancient Tibetan village, the gateway to Upper Mustang.
Before reaching Kagbeni, our lunch break, we take a detour to Panglign by riding across the suspension bridge and on a scenic natural trail across the apple fields. During the ride to Jomsom, you will realize that Mustang is unlike any other place: characterized by its barren land, its windswept – desert-like hills, and its broad color palette: shades of pink, purple, brown, and gray. South of these colorful mountains lies Kagbeni, known as “the village beyond the mountains”.
After lunch, riders are free to explore the village, scattered with irrigation canals, apple trees fields, and beyond the modern Kagbeni village, abandoned houses – part of the ancient village, destroyed, according to a legend, by a demon with a lion’s head and snake’s body.
Details: 16km of jeep track and singletrails, D+ approx. 550m / D- approx. 400m
Day 6: Ride from Kagbeni to Muktinath
We start the day with the sunrise over Nilgiri mountain (7,061m) and the Kaligandaki gorge. We are now set for a good day of mountain biking in the mountains. Right after exiting the village, we start our climb towards Muktinath (3,800m), a sacred temple for both Hindus and Buddhists located at the foot of the Thorang La mountains pass (5,416m). A 3-4 hour climb up to Muktinath will take you to the starting point, where you will feel the altitude. We’ll pause for lunch so you can catch your breath, drink fresh water, and enjoy the lunch served in Ranipauwa, the village below the Muktinath temple, overlooking the valley. After lunch, we will ride down to Kagbeni village on dusty single trails across the mountain’s side where you can enjoy the fast and flowy sections.
Details: 30km of singletrails, D+ approx. 600m / D- approx. 2100m
Day 7: Ride Lubra valley to Marpha
We all go in the Jeep to be shuttled up to Muktinath. A short one-hour climb takes us to Lupra pass at 4,200m, where we could take a moment to enjoy the view.
We start with a challenging downhill ride through local mule trails, loose rocks, exposed sections, and tight corners for an amazing fun journey down the valley.
Lunch will be served in Jomsom, followed by a short ride up to Thini village, crossing Dhumba mountain lake, and then Marpha, a small white-washed village with small typical alleys, and famous for its apple pies.
To further explore local culture, you can visit the local Buddhist monastery.
